Au Train River
Au Train, MI
This beautiful stretch of falls is very easy to find and isn't far away from the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore in Michigan. While some trees and hydroelectric pipes prevent a great view of the upper section of falls, it is a short walk to the lower falls, which can be viewed from either side of an old wooden bridge or from the bridge itself. Here the river drops about ten feet over stone shelves then falls in a slide as it works its way under the bridge and away. Due to the damming of the river here, there can be a severe variation in flow from time to time, and it's crazy to think how spectacular these falls could be if left alone.
Getting there: The falls are well signed off of M-94 south/west of Munising and very close to Laughing Whitefish Falls. Turn north on Autrain Forest Lake Rd and look for the trail road on the right with signs for the falls - there is a parking area before a gate, from which point on only pedestrian traffic is allowed.
